HPV Vaccine: Not Just for Girls.
January is National Cervical Health month – an easy reminder to be sure to schedule a well check with your primary care provider or an annual with your OB/GYN. Besides that, this is a good time to talk about the HPV vaccine. HPV and cervical precancers have dropped since 2006, when the vaccines were first used in the US.
Now, what was once a vaccine intended to be given to girls before the age of sexual activity has received an age and gender update in recent years.
Now, the HPV vaccine is recommended for all genders and for:
Everyone through age 26
Some adults age 27 through 45 years who were not already vaccinated might choose to get HPV vaccine after speaking with their doctor about their risk for new HPV infections and possible benefits of vaccination for them.
The HPV vaccine can be given at a well check appointment with your primary care provider or OB/GYN and is usually covered by insurance. The CDC offers more information here. https://www.cdc.gov/hpv/parents/vaccine-for-hpv.html.
