Antibody testing for COVID-19?

June 4, 2020

OMG's Chief Medical Officer Stacy Chance, MD, addresses COVID-19 antibody testing here. There are two types of COVID-19 tests. One tests if you have COVID-19. The other is referred to as an antibody test. We’re receiving a lot of questions from patients, wondering if antibody testing is something they should have done. The doctors at OMG do not currently recommend antibody testing for most people. The reasons for that include:

  • It takes a long time for your body to make antibodies to a virus (1-3 weeks or more)
  • The tests currently available are not good enough.  They are wrong too often.
  • Nobody knows if having antibodies protects you from getting COVID-19.
We will let our community and patients know when good testing is available, and we look forward to when that happens.
