20 Local Adventures in 2020
January 15, 2020
We’re launching our 20 for 2020 Local Adventure list with the classic hike to the top of Spencer’s Butte. That said, keep in mind that there’s a lot to enjoy along the way. Enjoy the meadow tucked below the trail, near the trailhead, peek into the ‘fairy canyons’ by the footbridge, and pause for views. At the top, a clear day reveals Three Sisters and Fern Ridge, plus a bird’s eye view of town.
There are multiple routes to the top, and the trail is well marked. The most popular and most accessible route is 1.7 miles out and back. Some portions are fairly steep, so take your time. You’ll climb about 1,000’ in elevation, but switchbacks make it manageable for most. (The average grade is 8%.)
Most of this hike is tucked into the Doug Firs, making it a good outing even in the drizzle. The rocky top is exposed, so be prepared for the weather. Stay off the top in high wind or lightning.
Where to start: Head south on Willamette Street to the main Spencer Butte Park lot. The trail begins at the top of the stairs (you’ll see them from the lot). Aggressive hikers might consider the West Trail, but most families will do best on the Main Summit Trail.
