Water Safety Rules to Live By

Headed for the water to keep your cool this week? Go for it. But please, be safe. Each year brings tragedies that are preventable.

  1. Eyes on kids at all times. No matter how shallow the water is, and even if you think others are watching, watch your kids. Be sure you’re not in charge of more kids than you can manage.

  2. Always wear a life jacket. Even if it’s not legally required, if you’re on a body of water, wear a PFD. You’ll keep yourself safe if someone else needs you. Pool toys that are filled with air or foam, such as noodles or inner tubes should not be used instead of a life jacket

  3. Scout your route. Never jump into water without being certain of its depth, and if you’re floating a river, be sure you know what’s up ahead.

  4. Stay sober. Avoid drinking alcohol before swimming, boating or engaging in other water activities and do drink while supervising children.

  5. Use a buddy system. Swim with a friend, no matter how old you are.

  6. Longer term, take these steps to keep you – and those around you – safe while having fun in the water.

    1. Learn to swim: If you don’t know how to swim, it’s time to learn! You’ll have more fun, and feel safer around the water.

    2. Teach your kids to swim: Oregon has 2,391 square miles of water in it. Prepare your kids by helping them learn to swim.

    3. Learn or refresh CPR: Knowing CPR is a life-saving skill. We hope you never need to use it, but practice or refresh your knowledge.
